Diese exklusive Zuwendung zum jeweiligen Liebespartner ist - so einfach sie auf den ersten Blick erscheinen mag - tatsächlich hochkomplex. Zwischen zwei Liebenden spielen sich ständig Kommunikationsprozesse ab, die für Liebessituationen typisch sind und so nur im Kontext der Liebe stattfinden. Letztendlich dienen sie dem Zweck, sich einander der Liebe, die man füreinander empfindet, zu versichern. Doch was genau wird dabei in der Liebeskommunikation kommuniziert - oder, aus einer etwas anderen Richtung betrachtet: Wie vermittelt man dem Partner dessen Bedeutung für einen selbst? Es geht also darum, wie sich Liebe kommunizieren lässt. Das Problem, auf das man beim Versuch, dem anderen aufrichtig seine Liebe zu ihm bzw. ihr vermitteln zu wollen, unweigerlich stößt, ist das der Inkommunikabilität (vgl. Luhmann 1994, 153ff). Um dabei die „Unmöglichkeit der Aufrichtigkeit“ (ebd., 154) zu umgehen, haben sich in der Liebeskommunikation ganz bestimmte Formen entwickelt, nach denen diese immer wieder abläuft.
Im Folgenden soll - nach einer kurzen, an Peter Fuchs orientierten Darstellung der Funktion, die die Liebe in der modernen Gesellschaft erfüllt - auf die Probleme verwiesen werden, die in der Liebeskommunikation auftreten und dargelegt werden, welche Strategien sich zu ihrer Lösung herausgebildet haben. Dabei wird die Literatur als Quelle von Formvorlagen für im Alltag stattfindende Liebeskommunikationen aufgezeigt und dargestellt, warum gerade die in Romanen beschriebenen Kommunikations- und Verhaltensweisen als Vorbild für reale Liebeskommunikation dienen. Zudem soll kurz die Frage danach behandelt werden, welche weiteren Quellen für Formvorlagen heute neben der Literatur existieren.
