Der Begriff des ‘Normalen’, der ‘Normalität’ scheint eindeutig zu sein - im Alltag wird er ganz selbstverständlich benutzt. Doch es gibt kaum einen Begriff wie den der ‘Normalität’, der so verworren und so vieldeutig ist. Auf die Frage, ob Menschen mit geistiger Behinderungnormalsind, können verschiedene Menschen unterschiedlich antworten. So können zwei Personen der Ansicht sein, dass sie Menschen mit Behinderung nicht normal finden und doch etwas Unterschiedliches damit meinen, den Begriff des Normalen unterschiedlich deuten. Der Erste könnte meinen, dass es nicht normal ist, behindert zu sein, weil er ‘normal’ mit der biologischen Norm gleichsetzt, welcher Menschen mit Behinderung nicht entsprechen; der Zweite könnte ‘normal’ mit seinem Alltag vergleichen, in dem Menschen mit Behinderung nicht (oder nur in unterdurchschnittlicher Anzahl) vorkommen. Zwei weitere Personen, die die Ansicht vertreten, dass Menschen mit Behinderung normal sind, übersetzen diesen Begriff für sich wieder anders. Der Erste findet Behinderung normal, da Behinderung für ihn eine natürliche Daseinsform darstellt und der Zweite, weil er in einer Werkstatt für Menschen mit geistiger Behinderung arbeitet und jeden Tag mit dieser Personengruppe im Kontakt kommt und es so für ihn zu seiner persönlichen Normalität geworden ist. An diesen Beispielen wird deutlich, dass es eben nichtdie eine, richtigeDefinition von ‘Normalität’ gibt und sich die verschiedensten Bedeutungen hinter ihr verbergen.
