Errungenschaften groß gewesen. Maschinen ersetzten, die für Menschen, anstrengenden
Arbeitsprozesse. Doch schnell schlug diese Euphorie um in die Erkenntnis, dass der Mensch
nun nur noch ein Beiwerk der Maschine ist. Durch die Automatisierung und Mechanisierung
änderten sich grundlegend, die bis dahin existierenden, Werte- und Verhaltensmuster. An die
Stelle humanistischer Werte traten Technik und Maschine. So fand auch mit der Erfindung
des Films - und damit verbunden des Kinos – die Verdrängung der Literatur statt. Im Zuge der
Technologisierung ist in den Menschen aber auch das Gefühl erwachsen, weniger bedeutend
zu sein als eine Maschine.
Genau diese Thematik wird in dem Werk Quaderni di Serafino Gubbio operatore von dem
Sizilianer Luigi Pirandello aufgegriffen. Dieses Werk, das im Jahr 1915 entstanden ist, erzählt
die Geschichte des Kameramanns Serafino Gubbio, der nicht in der Lage ist sich der
Gegenwart und dem damit verbundenen technologischen Fortschritt anzupassen. Er
arrangiert sich nicht mit der Welt des Films, in der er arbeitet, sondern stellt ihr die Literatur
gegenüber und schwelgt in den Erinnerungen vergangener Tage. Diese Arbeit als
Kameramann, die Serafino so zu wider ist, veranlasst ihn dazu, seine Umwelt nur passiv
wahrzunehmen und sich zunehmend von ihr zu distanzieren.
Pirandello präsentiert mit diesem Buch wieder ein Werk, in dem sein Held unter dem Zwang
der Umgebung Rollen spielen muss, denen er meist nicht gewachsen ist. So entstehen auch
für diesen Helden letztendlich groteske Situationen.
Im Folgenden wird nun untersucht, in welchem Kontext das Werk Pirandellos entstanden ist,
um daraufhin zu analysieren, welchen Einfluss der technologische Fortschritt auf die
Entfremdung des Kameramanns Serafino Gubbio hat.
