Es wurde als Teilbereich der Germanistik behandelt und existierte nicht in der Form, wie wir es heute kennen.
In den 1960er Jahren wurde an der Universität Leipzig der erste Lehrstuhl für Deutsch als Fremdsprache eingerichtet. Erst Anfang der 1970er Jahre wurde das Studienfach Deutsch als Fremdsprache zur Diskussion gebracht und wird nun allgemein als eigenes Studienfach und Forschungsgebiet angesehen.
Heute unterscheidet man Deutsch als Fremdsprache in drei Varianten: als eigenständiges Fach (Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache), als Sprachlehr- und Sprachlernforschung (Didaktik) und als Teil der Germanistik in der deutschen Philologie. In Deutschland gibt es für das Studienfach Deutsch als Fremdsprache verschiedene Auffassungen, welche Disziplin im Mittelpunkt des Faches steht. Wenn man das Fach Deutsch als Fremdsprache alleinstehend betrachtet, findet man oft Darstellungen, welche in Linguistik, Didaktik, Landeskunde, Kulturwissenschaft und Literaturwissenschaft unterteilt sind. Innerhalb der Germanistik findet man Deutsch als Fremdsprache oft unter der angewandten Sprachwissenschaft, der angewandten Literaturwissenschaft und sogar unter Fremdkulturwissenschaft. Innerhalb der allgemeinen Fremdsprachenwissenschaft findet man DaF in den Bereichen der Sprachwissenschaft, der Didaktik im Bezug auf Fremdsprachenerwerb und Fremdsprachenvermittlung und auch in der Literaturwissenschaft.
Wenn man all diese verschiedenen Definitionen betrachtet, kann man erkennen, dass sich Gemeinsamkeiten in allen drei Wissenschaftsdisziplinen herausbilden. Deutsch als Fremdsprache wird in jeder Variante unter Sprache, Literatur und Landeskunde definiert.
Was den Bereich der Didaktik betrifft, so gibt es dort ebenfalls unterschiedliche Meinungen. Im „Handbuch für Fremdsprachenunterricht“ von Götz und Pommerin wird wiederum in drei Bereiche unterschieden, in dem die Didaktik für Deutsch als Fremdsprache definiert wird. Dort wird zwischen angewandter Sprachwissenschaft, angewandter Literaturwissenschaft und Probleme der Landeskunde für deutschsprachige Länder unterschieden.
Diese Arbeit zeigt an ausgewählten Beispielen die Situation des Faches Deutsch als Fremdsprache. Sie beschreibt die Schwierigkeit der Definition dieses Faches und welche Probleme und Möglichkeiten sich für Lehrer als auch Lerner im Fach ergeben.
