Der Kapitalerhaltungszweck, der in der deutschen Rechnungslegung nach HGB gleichwertig dem Informationszweck ist, hat bei IFRS allenfalls eine indirekt untergeordnete Bedeutung. Diese unterschiedlichen Ziele führen u. a. dazu, dass sich die Ertragserfassung nach IFRS von der nach HGB unterscheiden. Nach HGB dürfen grundsätzlich nur realisierte Erträge in der GuV erfasst werden. Wohingegen nach IFRS unter bestimmten Vorraussetzungen noch unrealisierte bzw. erst realisierbare Erträge in der GuV erfasst werden können. Diese nach IFRS im Vergleich zum HGB zum Teil frühere Ertragserfassung wurde zuletzt im Zusammenhang mit den zahlreichen Bilanzskandalen in der Vergangenheit stark kritisiert.
Die Realisation von Erträgen und Aufwendungen hängt eng mit der Bilanzierungsfähigkeit zusammen. Wenn ein Ertrag realisiert wird, wird zwangsläufig gleichzeitig ein Aktivposten in der Bilanz angesetzt und damit kommt es zu einer Eigenkapitalerhöhung. Die Periodenabgrenzung ist hierfür das grundlegende Prinzip. Ihr wesentlichstes Teilprinzip ist das Realisationsprinzip für Erträge. Die grundsätzliche Regelung enthält IAS 18 Erträge „Revenue“, der den Zeitpunkt der Realisierung folgender Geschäftsvorfälle regelt: Umsatzerlöse (IAS 18.14), Erträge aus dem Erbringen von Dienstleistungen (IAS 18.20) sowie Erträge aus der Überlassung von Vermögensgegenständen gegen Zinsen, Dividenden und Lizenzgebühren (IAS 18.29).
Das Realisationsprinzip wird stark durch die nationalen Rechnungslegungstraditionen beeinflusst. So wird z. B. im anglo-amerikanischen Bereich die jederzeitige Realisierbarkeit als ausreichend empfunden, wohingegen im kontinentaleuropäischen Bereich mehr auf rechtliche Kriterien geachtet wird.
