Einer der wichtigsten statistischen Themenkreise ist der, der sich mit politischen Fragen bzw. der Arbeit der Regierung beschäftigt. Die in diesen Statistiken dargestellten Fakten dienen meist als Grundlage für Entscheidungen in der Politik bzw. zur Entschlussfindung der regierenden Partei. Gerade auf diesem Gebiet der Statistik wird klar, wie wichtig heutzutage Statistiken sind, wie sie in das Leben des Einzelnen aber auch in das Leben ganzer Staaten eingreifen. Ob als Basis von Prognosen oder als Grundlage von politischen Programmen, Statistiken sind aus dem täglichen Leben , besonders dem politischen Leben nicht mehr wegzudenken.
Deshalb möchte ich in meiner Seminararbeit dieses Thema ein wenig beleuchten und beschäftige mich deshalb mit dem Thema "Regierungsstatistik". Hierzu dient als Grundlage ein englischer Text mit dem Titel "Government Statistics" aus the International Encycopedia of the Social Sciences ( IESS ) London l968 ( l972 2nd edition ).
Die Überschrift "Government Statistics ", welche auch immer wieder im Text auftaucht, wird frei mit dem Ausdruck Regierungsstatistik bzw. Regierungserhebung oder Staatliche Statistik bzw. Erhebung übersetzt.
Im zweiten Teil meiner Arbeit werde ich mich mit einer aktuellen Statistik unter Einbeziehung des im Campus Verlag veröffentlichten Buches "So lügt man mit Statistik " von Walter Krämer (Frankfurt l99l) auseinandersetzen. An diesem aktuellen Beispiel möchte aufzeigen wie selbstverständlich für uns der Umgang mit Statistiken geworden ist, ohne dass wir uns Gedanken darüber machen, was hinter diesen Zahlen steht und zu welchem Zweck sie uns aufgezeigt werden.
