Das Wort hat in den letzten 30 Jahren einen kometenhaften Aufstieg hinter sich. Was früher nur eine Bezeichnung für eine Gruppe von konservativen protestantischen Christen in den USA war, ist heute darüber hinaus zum Synonym für Rückständigkeit, Intoleranz und sogar für physische Gewalt geworden. In der vorliegenden Seminararbeit soll der Fundamentalismus betrachtet werden, der diesen Begriff in die Welt gesetzt hat. Dabei spielen mehrere historische Faktoren eine Rolle, die zur Entstehung beigetragen haben. Für das Christentum aus der Reformation hat die Heilige Schrift einen besonders hohen Stellenwert als Urkunde von Glauben und Glaubenserkenntnis. Die rechte Auslegung der Bibel war und ist eine fundamentale Forderung. Aber die Auslegung geriet im Lauf der Moderne ins Wanken. Vor allem die sogenannte historisch-kritische Exegese schien die herkömmlichen Auffassungen in Frage zu stellen. Dagegen protestierten zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts amerikanische Protestanten. Eine weitere Vorraussetzung für die Entstehung des Fundamentalismus war die evangelikale Bewegung des 19. Jahrhunderts in den USA. Dieser Bewegung ging es vor allem um die Rettung der Seelen durch Evangelisation und Erweckung. Zunächst zeichnete die Evangelikalen ein Fortschrittsoptimismus aus. Sie erwarteten, dass bald das Tausendjährige Reich und die Apokalypse in Amerika hereinbrechen werden. Dann aber folgte eine radikale Kehrtwendung gegen die neue Zeit und der Kampf gegen den Modernismus wurde aufgenommen.
