Sie müssen sich, um sich positiv von den Mitbewerbern abzusetzen, einen einzigartigen Wettbewerbsvorteil, sozusagen eine „unique selling position“, verschaffen. Doch nicht nur auf der Seite des Arbeitsmarktes ist dies erforderlich. Auch die Mitarbeiter der Unternehmen sehen sich diesem Druck ausgesetzt, denn auch ihr Arbeitsplatz ist von Ihrem Können und den daraus resultierenden Erfolgen abhängig. Prof. Hubert Markl, ehemaliger Präsident der Max-Plank-Gesellschaft (1996-2002), analysiert die Situation wie folgt: „Wer nur kann, was alle können, (...) kann auch nur tun, was alle tun können. Damit wird er [der Mitarbeiter; Anm. des Verfassers] zum beliebig austauschbaren Produktionsfaktor.“
