Seit dem Tod Alexanders des Großen waren seine Nachfolger, die hellenistischen Könige, immer darum bemüht, ihr Territorial nach dem Vorbild Alexanders auszuweiten, oder wenn nötig zu verteidigen. Keiner duldete einen anderen über sich. So auch um die Wende vom 3. zum 2. Jahrhundert. Antiochos III., König der Seleukiden und Philipp V. von Makedonien hatten sich gegen den Ptolemäerkönig, welcher gerade einmal sechs Jahre alt war, verbündet und planten die Aufteilung seines Reiches um dieses dann in ihre jeweiligen Machtbereiche einzugliedern. Jedoch stellen sich viele Fragen um diesen Vertrag, die z.T. bis heute nicht beantwortet werden konnten. Zum einen muss man sich fragen, ob der Vertrag wirklich eine historische Tatsache darstellt, oder nur ein Konstrukt, von Historikern, die falsche Quellen tradierten, ist. Außerdem ist es wichtig zu erörtern, von wem die Initiative einer solchen Vereinbarung ausging und ob diese Pläne letztendlich auch verwirklicht wurden. Um den Rahmen der Arbeit nicht zu sprengen, soll der Schwerpunkt auf der Diskussion über den Vertrag liegen. Es wird nur ansatzweise die Vorgeschichte der drei größten hellenistischen Königreiche eingegangen. Zeitlich wird sich die Arbeit im Großen und Ganzen auf die Jahre 204-196 v. Chr. beschränken.
Zu Beginn muss jedoch erst einmal die Erläuterung der Quellen- bzw. Forschungslage stehen. Anschließend soll kurz auf den historischen Hintergrund des Vertrages eingegangen werden, bis sich schließlich dem eigentlichen Thema der Arbeit, dem Teilungsvertrag, zugewandt wird. Dabei soll erörtert werden, ob der Vertag wirklich historisch ist, wie er geschlossen wurde, was der Inhalt des Vertrags war und ob die darin vereinbarten Beschlüsse auch eingehalten bzw. verwirklicht wurden.
