Wachstumszahlen sehen allein auf dem europäischen Logistikdienstleistungsmarkt im Vergleich von 1999 bei 137 Milliarden Euro einen Anstieg bis 2005 um 49 Milliarden Euro. Während früher Logistik auf ihre physischen Prozesse beschränkt wurde, hat sich daraus ein Managementkonzept entwickelt. Ausgeprägte Logistik gilt als Wettbewerbsvorteil und bewegte in den letzten Jahren viele Unternehmen dazu stärker miteinander zusammenzuarbeiten, um Waren-, Informations- und Finanzflüsse zu optimieren. Diese Ziele werden versucht durch das Supply-Chain-Management (SCM) realisiert zu werden. Mit dem Internet entstanden neue Möglichkeiten des Kommunikations- und Informationsaustausches, welche die Umsetzung eines erfolgreichen SCM maßgeblich förderten. In diesem Zusammenhang beherrschte vor allem der E-Commerce die Geschäftswelt, wie kein anderer Begriff in den letzten Jahren. Längst sind der schnelle Austausch digitaler Informationen über Emails und Geldgeschäfte über sichere SSL Verbindungen zum Tagesgeschäft geworden. Das Potential des E-Commerce ist jedoch nicht auf diese beiden Vorteile beschränkt. Eine Umfrage der KPMG/BDA ergab, dass Unternehmen primär durch eine Verbesserung der Prozesseffizienz profitieren. Weiterhin wurde genannt, dass Unternehmen, die E-Commerce nutzen, einen Imagegewinn erfahren, da sie als innovativ gelten. Außerdem werden sich die Beschaffungsmärkte ausweiten und die Transaktionskosten gesenkt werden. E-Commerce gilt auch als wirkungsvolles Instrument zur Kundenbindung und der Wettbewerbsdifferenzierung.
Eine Untersuchung des E-Commerce vor allem im Logistikumfeld soll im Rahmen dieser Seminararbeit vorgestellt werden. Ziel dieser Seminararbeit ist dabei einen knappen Überblick über die Wechselwirkungen des E-Commerce und der Logistik zu verschaffen, jedoch können aufgrund der Komplexität des Themas einige Bereiche nur kurz genannt werden. Weitere Erläuterungen würden sonst den Rahmen dieser Arbeit sprengen. Der Aufbau der Arbeit gliedert sich wie folgt.
