Er erbarmte sich allerdings Noah und dessen Familie, auf Grund ihrer Frömmigkeit (Gen 65ff). Noah musste eine Arche bauen, auf die er sich mit seiner Familie, sowie reinen und unreinen Tieren, während der Sintflut zurückziehen und der Vernichtung entgehen konnte. Nach Ende der Sintflut baute Noah, als Dank für seine Errettung, einen Altar für YHWH und brachte auf diesem Brandopfer dar. YHWHs Reaktion auf diese Opfer ist für das weitere Verhältnis von Mensch und Erde (und YHWH) von großer Wichtigkeit. Die Einzelexegese, sowie Gesamtinterpretation wird zeigen, weshalb Gen 820-22 für Horst Seebass „unbestritten zu den gewichtigsten [Stellen] der ganzen Bibel [gehört].“ Die biblische Sintfluterzählung weist einige Parallelen zu ähnlichen mythologischen Fluterzählungen anderer Kulturen auf. Eine besonders enge Verwandtschaft lässt sich zu dem viel älteren sumerisch-babylonischen Gilgamesch-Epos erkennen. Für ein besseres Verständnis der biblischen Erzählung sind grundlegende Kenntnisse dieses Epos nötig. Aus diesem Grund wird er unter 5.1 Exkurs Gilgamesch-Epos genauer beschrieben und fließt auch in die Einzelexegese mit ein.
