Mit dem Fall der Mauer kam für die im Volksmund mehr oder weniger liebevoll „Plastebomber“ genannten Fahrzeuge und für die Volkseigenen Betriebe (VEB) Sachsenring in Eisenach (Trabant) und Zwickau (Wartburg) das Ende.
Wohl kaum ein politisches System dürfte im Ausland je so sehr mit den automobilen Artefakten seiner Wirtschaft identifiziert, ja mitunter auf diese reduziert worden sein, wie die DDR dies mit dem Trabant (und auch hier zeigt sich wiederum eine Reduktion, da es sich beim im Volksmund gemeinten „Trabi“ wohl ausschließlich um den Trabant P 601 handeln dürfte, allein aufgrund der ab 1964 kaum veränderten Optik), natürlich aber auch mit dem Wartburg wurde. Beide sind heute (wenn auch selten noch) rollende Beweise für die Rückständigkeit eines ganzen Wirtschaftssystems. Die Industrie der DDR ist zu einem Synonym für die real nicht funktionierende Plan- und Zentralverwaltungswirtschaft des sozialistischen Regimes geworden. Viele Vorgänge aus der Wirtschaft der DDR erscheinen heute geradezu kurios, denkt man z.B. an Warteschlangen für Konsumgüter oder den täglichen Bedarf oder in Bezug auf das Automobil an die horrend langen Wartezeiten bis zur Auslieferung.
