Transparenz und Vergleichbarkeit der Jahresabschlüsse, Basel II und die Informationsbedürfnisse der Kreditinstitute verstärken den Druck zur internationalen Rechnungslegung. Somit steigt auch der Druck auf nicht börsennotierte Unternehmen, nach den internationalen Normen zu bilanzieren. Es sind aber nicht nur die externen Gründe, auch unternehmensinterne Gründe sprechen häufig für eine Anwendung der IAS/IFRS Standards. Der Gesetzgeber hat bereits ein Wahlrecht für die Bilanzierung nach IAS/IFRS auch im Einzelabschluss festgesetzt. Eine Verpflichtung für den Mittelstand ist nach den derzeitigen Gesetzesentwürfen nicht vorgesehen, aber immer mehr Unternehmen stellen sich die Frage, ob eine freiwillige Umstellung auf internationale Standards vorgenommen werden sollte. Von Vorteil sehen viele Unternehmen die bessere Darstellung der Vermögens-, Finanz- und Ertragslage. Aber auch der hohe Aufwand und die mit der Umstellung verbundenen Kosten bleiben vom Mittelstand nicht unbeachtet. Eine neue Situation, auf die sich alle Abteilungen eines Unternehmens, Wirtschaftsprüfer und Finanzanalysten einstellen müssen.
