Nach überwiegender Meinung der Kritikgehört Middlemarch zu den Romanen, in denen George Eliot nicht nur ihre Zielsetzung in Hinblick auf „aesthetic teaching“ am effizientesten und ausgefeiltesten verwirklichen konnte sondern auch die Erzählinstanz im Vergleich zu ihren vorangegangenen Werken weitere Formen und Funktionen hinzugewinnen lässt.
Diese Formen und Funtionen der Erzählinstanz sollen, soweit sie für die Erzeugung von „sympathy“ auf Seiten des Rezipienten als relevant zu betrachten sind, im folgenden beschrieben und anhand von Textbeispielen aus Middlemarch näher betrachtet werden. Ziel soll es sein, die Formen der Erzählinstanz, mit Hinblick auf ihre Funktionen als „Sympathieerzeuger“ in verschiedenen Ausprägungen zu erfassen und einen zumindest oberflächlichen Eindruck von deren Wirkungsmechanismus zu erlangen. Dabei liegt es auf der Hand, dass die Präferenzen mehr auf der Begutachtung einzelner, prägnanter Beispiele, denn auf der quantitativen Erfassung liegen.
