Philip Melanchthon und Martin Luther sind zwei namhafte Vertreter dieser Bewegungen. Diese Zeit hatte auch Auswirkungen auf das Bildungswesen, die teilweise bis heute Bestand haben und somit für uns immer noch spürbar sind. Um die Reformen von damals aber in ihrer Tragweite verstehen zu können, ist es natürlich zunächst erforderlich einen Blick auf die Verhältnisse im 16. Jahrhundert zu blicken. Dabei sollen sowohl der Bildungsstand der Menschen zu dieser Zeit als auch die geschichtlichen Ereignisse eine Rolle spielen. Im Anschluss daran werden die einzelnen Verdienste und Versuche von Luther und Melanchthon näher betrachtet werden.
