Häufig werden Begriffe bei Übersetzungen und Übertragungen in andere Sprachen - und somit auch in andere sozioökonomische Systeme - unterschiedlich aufgefasst und gedanklich reflektiert. Interpretationen gestalten sich als besonders schwierig, wenn Begriffe schon bei ihrem sprachgeschichtlichen Ursprung ein gewisses Maß an terminologischer „Unschärfe“ mit sich bringen. Erfordert das Verständnis eines solchen Ausdrucks auch noch eine Abweichung von etablierten Denkmustern, also von kulturellen und anderen Paradigmen, so ist die Reflexion um so vielfältiger. Hieraus können beim Gebrauch in Theorie und Praxis Missverständnisse, Verwirrungen und Ungenauigkeiten entstehen. Als eine relative junge Disziplin im Rahmen der Betriebswirtschaftslehre blieb die Immobilienökonomie von einer solchen Entwicklung nicht verschont. Scheinbar eindeutige Begriffe im Bereich des Corporate Real Estate Management (CREM) und anderen Bereichen werden auch heute noch teilweise ungenau benutzt.
In diesem Zusammenhang ist es das Ziel dieser Arbeit, einen Beitrag zum Verständnis der bestehenden Terminologie ausgewählter Fachbegriffe zu leisten. Die Begriffe Asset Management, Facility Management, Portfolio Management und Property Management sollen im Rahmen dieser Arbeit anhand von aktueller Fachliteratur definiert und von-einander abgegrenzt werden.
