Bis zur zweiten Hälfte der 90er Jahre war dies für viele Unternehmen ein weitgehend unbekannter Begriff, insbesondere für den Mittelstand. Vor allem durch die Überarbeitung der internationalen Eigenkapitalübereinkunft, kurz Basel II genannt, hat sich diese Situation grundlegend geändert. Durch Basel II gewinnt im Mittelstand vor allem das interne Rating enorm an Relevanz und bedeutet für viele kleine und mittlere Unternehmen tief greifende Veränderungen. Mit diesem Kulturwandel kommen gerade die verschwiegenen Mittelständler oft nicht zurecht. Doch der Mittelstand in Deutschland ist Wachstumsmotor und Kern der Wirtschaft. Fast 20 Millionen Menschen arbeiten, forschen und entwickeln in den mehr als 3,3 Millionen KMU´s der Republik. Von ihnen hängt ab, ob die deutsche Wirtschaft stagniert oder wächst. Im Mittel-stand entstehen mehr Patente, Innovationen und Jobs als in den großen Konzernen. Finanziert wird das alles traditionell über Kredite, die auch zukünftig das bedeutendste Finanzierungsinstrument bleiben werden. Doch die Kapitalgeber erwarten heute deutlich mehr Informationen von kreditsuchenden Unternehmen als in der Vergangenheit. Dies stellt eine höhere Anforderung an die Transparenz, da Anlageentscheidungen kritisch hinterfragt werden. Gezielt eingesetzt bietet das Instrument „Rating“ jedoch auch die Möglichkeit, die Transparenz gegenüber Banken und Geschäftspartnern zu erhöhen und somit Wettbewerbsvorteile zu erlangen.
