Die Arbeit beginnt mit einer kurzen Vorstellung der Person Bernhard von Clairvaux bei der zwischen seinem weltlichen und seinem klösterlichen Leben unterschieden wird. Diese Unterscheidung habe ich bewusst gewählt, um die Hintergründe seiner Entscheidung für das Klosterleben besser nachvollziehen zu können. Es wird auch nur auf seine wichtigsten Lebensstationen eingegangen, da einige andere Punkte im Kapitel des Ordens genannt und erläutert werden. Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt bei der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Zisterzienserorden, in dem erst die Gründung, dann das geistliche Ziel in Verbindung mit Bernhard von Clairvaux und danach das Leben innerhalb des Klosters beschrieben wird. Dabei wird zunächst das Kloster als Ort und Bauwerk vorgestellt und anschließend ein Überblick über den Alltag der Mönche zu geben versucht. Zum Schluss folgt noch ein kleiner Überblick über die Verbreitung, den Verfall und den Wiederaufbau des Ordens. Abschließen werde ich mit einem kurzen Fazit.
