Viele Unternehmen betrachten Kooperationen als vielversprechende Methode zur Nutzung unternehmensübergreifender Synergien. Aus diesem Grund hat in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten ein rapides Wachstum der Anzahl dieser Partnerschaften stattgefunden. Doch viele Manager sind mit den Ergebnissen unzufrieden. Über 40% der Befragten einer Untersuchung von Littler waren der Meinung, dass F&E-Kooperationen zu steigenden Kosten und einer verminderten Effizienz im Produktentwicklungsprozess führen. Zu einem ähnlichen Ergebnis gelangten Ragatz in einer Studie über F&E-Kooperationen mit Lieferanten. Hier waren fast ein Drittel der Befragten der Ansicht, dass die Ergebnisse der Kooperation hinter den Erwartungen zurück blieben. Andere Autoren gehen sogar von einer Misserfolgsrate von bis zu 60% aus.
Die erfolgreiche Nutzung von unternehmensübergreifenden Synergien bei der Einbindung von Lieferanten in den Produktentwicklungsprozess verlangt demzufolge nach der Kenntnis aller relevanten Faktoren, sowie nach einer wohl durchdachten und geplanten Herangehensweise.
Diese Hypothese soll im Folgenden bearbeitet und belegt werden. Dazu schafft Kapitel 2 einen allgemeinen Rahmen bezüglich F&E-Kooperationen mit Lieferanten. Kapitel 3 betrachtet die Rolle verschiedener Theorien bei der Erörterung der bereits genannten Hypothese. Kapitel 4 geht zunächst auf allgemeine Erfolgsfaktoren ein, um dann weitere organisatorische Indikatoren, die bis zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt weniger Beachtung erfahren haben, zu untersuchen. Kapitel 5 soll die Ergebnisse zusammenfassen und einen Ausblick auf weitere Ansätze geben.
