Allein die Regierung Deutschland unterstütze mit 500 Millionen Euro Südostasien, aber auch in der Bevölkerung war eine äußerst hohe Spendenbereitschaft zu erkennen. Das freiwillige Spenden stellt ein uneigennütziges Verhalten dar, da der einzelne Bürger nicht wie eine Regierung in der Öffentlichkeit steht und dadurch zum Spenden, aus welchen Gründen auch immer, „verpflichtet“ wird. Dieses zumindest auf den ersten Blick solidarische und altruistische Verhalten steht somit im Gegensatz zur Überzeugung der Wirtschaftstheorie, die materielle Gewinne als entscheidungsrelevante Motivationen sehen (Ockenfels, 1999). Demnach werden Menschen nicht nur von eigennützigen, sondern auch von altruistischen Motivationen getrieben. Doch welche Motive dominieren nun das Entscheidungsverhalten? Diese Fragestellung wird unter anderem in dem nachfolgend vorgestellten Experiment von Ockenfels (1999) aufgegriffen. Dabei soll gezeigt werden, wie viel Spieler im Falle eines Gewinns an die anderen Verlierer bereit sind abzugeben, und durch welche Motive diese Entscheidung gelenkt wird, d.h. inwieweit Altruismus eine Rolle spielt.
