Examensarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2,0, Universität Mannheim, 92 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Mein Fokus liegt darauf, Manns politisches Denken aufzuzeigen, teilweise zu bewerten und zu untersuchen, inwieweit es denn Konstanten und Veränderungen in Manns politischem Denken gibt. Gerade in diesem Punkt gibt es noch kaum Forschungsliteratur. Um Veränderungen und Konstanten aufzuzeigen gehe ich nicht wie viele Titel, die sich mit Thomas Mann beschäftigen, chronologisch vor, sondern ich habe mir zwei Fixpunkte im Leben Thomas Manns ausgewählt, an denen ich seine politische Haltung beleuchte und abschließend im dritten Kapitel anhand von Grundvariablen seines politischen Denkens vergleiche. Meine Gliederung erscheint historisch, und das mit gutem Grund. Thomas Manns politisches Denken war geprägt von seinem Verhältnis zu seinem Vaterland. Damit ist es wichtig Deutschland zentriert zu arbeiten. Zum anderen war einer der Erklärungsansätze, die Thomas Mann für den deutschen Faschismus hatte, das Fehlen einer Revolution in Deutschland. Es macht also Sinn, Thomas Manns Haltungen zur Politik, sein Politikverständnis und seine Begrifflichkeit an den beiden revolutionsartigen Veränderungen Deutschlands 1918/19 und 1945 festzumachen. Ich halte mich nicht dogmatisch an die beiden Jahreszahlen, sondern betrachte den darum liegenden Zeitraum. Ich denke, dass meine Vorgehensweise hilft aus dem oft plakativen Verständnis Mannscher Politik auszubrechen, weg von den Phrasen, dass Thomas Mann unpolitisch war und 1922 dann von jetzt auf nachher Republikaner wurde und das Thomas Mann um 1945 mit seinem Antifaschismus seine ehemalige politische Denkweise vollkommen aufgegeben hat.
Ich weise nach, dass es in Thomas Manns politischem Denken doch überraschende Konstanten zwischen 1919 und 1945 gibt aber auch genauso überraschende Brüche.
