Das Internet hat damit längst die von Experten prophezeite Rolle einer Bibliothek menschlichen Wissens eingenommen und die Internetrecherche ist zu einer Kultur geworden, durch die immer größere Erfahrungsbereiche des wissensgesellschaftlichen Alltags erschlossen werden. Darin lässt sich auch das enorme Potential von Suchmaschinen als Wegweiser und Gatekeeper erkennen, denn sie verarbeiten den Rohstoff Information zu Wissen, kontrollieren und verteilen ihn. Suchmaschinen sind also unentbehrlich um Informationen zu finden und Wissen zu generieren. Für rund 60% der Suchenden weltweit ist Google die erste Wahl und stellt damit als eines der bekanntesten und erfolgreichsten Unternehmen der New Economy ein Quasi-Monopol dar. Auf Basis dieser Tatsache soll nun im Folgenden diskutiert werden, ob das Google-Monopol den freien Wissenszugang gefährdet und ob es notwendig erscheint seine Vormachtstellung im Suchmaschinenmarkt zu brechen. Google steht dabei exemplarisch für ein Informationsmonopol einer Suchmaschine. Die Arbeit gliedert sich folgendermaßen: beginnend mit der Vorstellung Googles, werden zunächst Entwicklung und Erfolg des Unternehmens erläutert, das Geschäftsmodell und die Funktionsweise des Suchdienstes erklärt und zuletzt die wichtigsten Dienste vorgestellt. Kapitel 3 wird sich anschließend eingehend mit der Frage beschäftigen, ob Google ein Informationsmonopol darstellt. Hierbei soll dem Leser der Überblick über Googles Stellung auf dem Weltmarkt gegeben, die Wichtigkeit von Informationsfreiheit deutlich gemacht und in diesem Zusammenhang Chancen und Problemfelder eines solchen Monopols diskutiert werden. Ferner wird - von dieser Basis ausgehend - die Macht des neuen Gatekeeper „Suchmaschine“ und der nötige Handlungsbedarf für die Medienpolitik erörtert, bevor ein Fazit diese Arbeit abschließt.
