Die Bezeichnung Geopolitik wurde erstmals von dem schwedischen Staatsrechtler Rudolf Kjellén in seinem „System der Politik“ (1917) verwendet und basierte auf dem Werk des deutschen Geographen Friedrich Ratzel („Politische Geographie“, 1897). Kjellén verstand die Geopolitik als „die Lehre über den Staat als geographischen Organismus oder Erscheinung im Raum“ (Kjellen 1917 zit. nach Ante 1981, S.8) und erreichte mit dieser Darstellung trotz der Kritik an dem Organismus -Vergleich erstmals die Verknüpfung der Staatslehre mit der geographischen Raum-Komponente. Die übertrieben geodeterministische Betrachtungsweise des deutschen Geographen Karl Haushofer in seiner späteren Weiterentwicklung der Geopolitik (1925), in der er die Politik allein den räumlichen Einflussfaktoren ausgesetzt sah, mündete in großen Teilen in die nationalsozialistische Lebensraumpolitik. Die ideologische und propa-gandistische Verwendung dieser geopolitischen Überlegungen in der nationalsozialistischen Politik führte zu einer langandauernden Diskreditierung der Disziplin Geopolitik.
