Pierre Bourdieu (1930 - 2002) studierte im Hauptfach Philosophie in Paris und unternahm als Soldat im Algerienkrieg 1958 - 1960 erste Feldforschungen zur Kultur der nordalgerischen Berber. 1979 erscheint in Frankreich sein sehr empirisch orientiertes (sog.) Hauptwerk „La Distinction. Critique sociale du jugement“, zu deutsch (1982): „Die feinen Unterschiede. Kritik der gesellschaftlichen Urteilskraft.“ Seit 1981 hatte er einen Lehrstuhl für Soziologie in Frankreich am College de France und galt als einer der renommiertesten Soziologen Frankreichs. Aus den Grundzügen seiner Untersuchungen in Algerien entstand seine Theorie des Habitus- Konzepts. Bourdieu erkannte, dass die archaisch- vorkapitalistischen algerischen Bauern im Zuge der Kolonialisierung Frankreichs durch die übergestülpte Ökonomisierung der Moderne völlig überfordert waren, da sie schlichtweg nicht über stillschweigend vorausgesetzte Verhaltensdispositionen des westlichen Kapitalismus und der modernen Zivilisation verfügten.
Das Wort und die entsprechende Verwendung des „Habitus“ stammt allerdings nicht von Bourdieu, sondern aus dem alten Latein der antiken Philosophie. Einer lexikalischen Eintragung zufolge versteht man unter „Habitus (lat.) der: ...Erscheinung, Haltung, Gehaben, Besonderheiten im Erscheinungsbild eines Menschen,... auf einer Disposition aufgebaute, er-worbene sittliche Haltung...“ „Habitualisieren“ bedeutet dementsprechend: „zur Gewohnheit machen resp. werden“. Cornelia Bohn ergänzt diese Definition in ihrer Untersuchung und Kritik an Bourdieu noch um die Formulierung des lateinischen „habilis“, der „Fähig- keit“. Auchgreift Bohn auf, dass es bei der deutschen Formulierung des „Habituskonzepts“, der Übersetzung Bourdieus aus dem Französischen, zu übersetzungsbedingten Missverständnissen kommen kann, da das Wort „Habitus“ im Deutschen einzig singulär gebraucht werden kann. Es gibt keine verschiedenen Arten des einen oder anderen Habitus oder ein Plural von Habitus.
Es wird nun im Folgenden dargestellt, inwiefern die Lebensweisen eines Individuums sich gegenseitig durch und mit seinem Umfeld erzeugen und erzeugen lassen.
