Um Vampire oder vampirähnliche Wesen und die Mittel zu ihrer Bekämpfung ranken sich unzählige Mythen, Volksmärchen und Bräuche. Erste Belege von Vampirvorstellungen lassen sich schon für das 12. Jahrhundert finden. Die eigentliche Blütezeit des Vampirglaubens erstreckte sich aber vom 17. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert. In dieser Zeit entstand daher auch eine Fülle an Dichtung und Literatur, die sich mit dem Thema des Vampirismus auseinandersetzte. Besonders in England gab es das seit langem etablierte Genre der „Gothic Tale“, des Schauerromans. In diese Hochzeit der Schauerromane und Vampirliteratur fällt auch das Erscheinen von Bram Stokers Roman „Dracula“ im Jahr 1897 - dem unbestrittenen Klassiker unter den Vampirromanen. Sein Einfluss auf das Genre - sei es in Literatur als auch Filmwar und ist seither immens. Bis heute gilt „Dracula“ als der Vampirroman schlechthin. Die meisten späteren Vampirgeschichten gehen auf ihn zurück und auch bei den meisten Filmen, die sich mit diesem Genre auseinandersetzen, ist ein - mal expliziter, mal impliziter - Einfluss durch Stokers Romanvorlage nicht zu verkennen.
