Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Kooperation der beiden Künstler sowie mit der Wirkung und Anwendung der Filmmusik in Vertigo. Sie ist Teil einer Gemeinschaftsarbeit und beschränkt sich somit auf einzelne Teilaspekte des Films. Beginnend mit einem kurzen einführenden Teil, der den Stellenwert von Vertigo in Hitchcocks Gesamtwerk verdeutlichen soll, sowie der anschließenden Analyse des Preludes unter filmmusikalischen Gesichtspunkten. Vertigo gilt heute als eines der Herzstücke in Alfred Hitchcocks Filmographie. Anders jedoch als andere seiner bekannten Filme jener Epoche, wie Rear Window (Das Fenster zum Hof), The Man Who Knew Too Much (Der Mann der zu viel wusste) oder North By Northwest (Der unsichtbare Dritte), die schon zum Zeitpunkt ihres Erscheinens von Feuilletons wie Publikum gleichermaßen geschätzt und verehrt wurden, brauchte Vertigo eine lange Reifephase um zum Klassiker zu werden. Vertigo erzählt die Geschichte des wegen Höhenangst aus dem Polizeidienst ausgeschiedenen Detektivs Scottie Ferguson, der von einem Freund den Auftrag bekommt, dessen neurotische Frau Madeleine zu bewachen. Er verliebt sich in sie, kann aber ihren Selbstmord nicht verhindern. Von Schuldkomplexen traumatisiert begegnet er einer Doppelgängerin der Toten, versucht sie nach seinen Vorstellungen und Fantasien zu gestalten und der Ver-storbenen anzugleichen und entdeckt schließlich, dass er einem Täuschungsmanöver zum Opfer gefallen ist.
