In der Bevölkerungsstärke haben sie mit 39,9 Millionen, wenn wir die etwa 3,9 Millionen Puertoricaner noch hinzurechnen, sogar Spanien überflügelt und sind eine der größten hispanophonen Gemeinschaften der Welt. Die über hundert spanischsprachigen Fernsehsender und Radiostationen in den Vereinigten Staaten sowie Schilder in Läden von Los Angeles bis New York mit “Aquí se habla español” zeugen davon, dass Spanisch längst zur zweiten Sprache der USA aufgestiegen ist. Immer mehr Unternehmen und Politiker erkennen die Bedeutung der Hispanos als Markt bzw. Wählerschaft. Das sollten sie auch, denn aufgrund hoher Geburtenrate und anhaltender Immigration sind die Hispanos die am schnellsten wachsende Bevölkerungsgruppe der Vereinigten Staaten. Experten schätzen, dass ihre Zahl bis 2050 auf etwa 102,6 Millionen ansteigt (Bevölkerungsanteil von 24 %). Diese Gemeinschaft ist jedoch keineswegs einheitlich. Sie setzt sich vielmehr aus Einwanderern unterschiedlicher Herkunftsländer zusammen. Die Bezeichnung Hispanos ist folglich ein Sammelbegriff für diejenigen US-Amerikaner, welche Spanisch als Muttersprache gemeinsam haben. Aber wie hat sich diese Sprachgemeinschaft im Lauf der Geschichte geformt und was läßt sich über ihre Herkunft sagen? Wie sind ihre Sprecher über die USA verteilt? Auf welche Weise zeigt sich heute das Spanische in den Vereinigten Staaten und wie wird es vom Englischen beeinflusst?
