Se trata, por supuesto, del debate sobre la “literatura comprometida”, así como se desarrolló en los años sesenta y setenta del siglo veinte, pero, en particular, nos referimos aquí a las contribuciones de Mario Vargas Llosa y Luisa Valenzuela en la conferencia con el título “The writer in politics” de Octubre de 1992 en Washington.
Nuestro trabajo se dividirá en dos partes: la primera, en la que resumiremos las posiciones de estos dos literatos, y la segunda en la que analizaremos más en detalleLa muerte y la doncella.La lectura del texto nos ayudará a contestar a la pregunta inicial, a entender hasta qué punto una pieza teatral, y la palabra literaria en general, pueda ser interpretada como un acto político y pueda hasta constituir una menaza para una facción política, para un gobierno dictatorial. Nos parece, además, que no se pueda hablar de la obra de Dorfman, sin nombrar una de las dimensiones más importantes de la literatura latinoamericana que se ocupa de las sociedades después de la caída de un régimen dictatorial: la memoria colectiva. En una sociedad herida por las barbaridades de la represión política, el esfuerzo para no olvidar la tortura, la violencia y el dolor es un deber de cada ciudadano sobrevivido. Para reconstruir una sociedad democrática es esencial que toda la población, colectivamente, recuerde los acontecimientos en toda su atrocidad y ayude a las generaciones futuras a guardar la memoria del pasado. La tarea de la literatura en este ámbito es evidente. Diarios, novelas, ensayos constituyen documentos muy válidos para que toda la población, también la que cronológicamente no fue testigo del terror, sea consciente de lo que los extremismos pueden significar. Además, la palabra escrita posee la fuerza de corregir la historia, de reescribirla y puede contrastar la intención del poder central de manipularla y cambiarla según sus objetivos. Por esta razón, en la conclusión del trabajo trataremos brevemente de esta otra dimensión de la escritura de Dorfman, o sea de la importancia de la literatura para construir una memoria colectiva.
