Mit viel Kreativität behandelt sie Themen, die überall auf der Welt von Bedeutung sind, zeigt starke Frauen und Problematiken der Befreiung der Frau aus den gesellschaftlichen und anderen Zwängen.
Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Romanen „Die Verteidigung des Glücks“ von Gioconda Belli und „Emilia“ von Angeles Mastretta. Sie beinhaltet sowohl einen theoretischen (1., 3. Kapitel) sowie einen werkimannenten (2. Kapitel) Teil, wobei die theoretischen Kapiteln sich mit dem Thema „nation building“ und Literatur in Lateinamerika, sowie mit der weiblichen Autobiografie auseinandersetzen. Es wird kurz die Entwicklung der „nation building Literatur“ umrissen und anhand der gegebenen Romane dargestellt, was sich daraus weiter entwickelt hat; außerdem wird skizziert, inwieweit der theoretische Begriff der Nation bei der Frau von heute Anklang findet und ob eine handelnde Revolutionärin, in diesem Fall Gioconda Belli, von denselben Quellen ihre Motivation schöpft, die in der theoretischen Literatur dargestellt sind.
Das zweite Kapitel untersucht vor allem die weiblichen Hauptprotagonistinnen, im Hinblick auf die so wichtigen Aspekte ihres Lebens wie die Freiheit und die Revolution werden die Parallelen und Unterschiede in ihrer Entwicklung und in ihren Charakteren dargestellt. Leider konnte in dieser Arbeit wegen des beschränkten Umfangs nicht auf alle Teilbereiche ihres Lebens eingegangen werden, wie die zum Beispiel Mutterschaft, Beruf und ähnliches. Da die beiden Romane miteinander verglichen werden, wurde vor allem auf jene Thematiken eingegangen, die in beiden Romanen stark präsent sind. Große Aufmerksamkeit wurde vor allem jenen Passagen geschenkt, in welchen die Frau außergewöhnlich für ihr Geschlecht handelt oder lebt, ob als Kämpferin oder Frau zweier Männer.
Im letzten Teil schließlich wird die theoretische Literatur über die von Frauen geschrieben Autobiografien herangezogen und dem autobiografischen Werk „Die Verteidigung des Glücks“ gegenübergestellt. Auch da wird nach Entsprechungen bzw. Widersprüchen gesucht und die „lebendige“ Literatur mit der Theorie verglichen.
