Die Dependenz zwischen der nachbarschaftlichen Kommunikation und der Hausform - in diesem Fall Hochhaus - rückt damit in den zentralen Punkt dieser Arbeit. Dabei ist das Hochhaus durch seine räumliche Gestaltung, Wohndichte und hohe Einwohnerzahl ein spezifisches System der sozialen Interaktion. Von Interesse ist die grundlegende Frage; welche Einflüsse von der hohen Konzentration einer großen Zahl von Wohnungen und damit einer großen Zahl von Einwohner auf einer geringen Fläche auf die soziale Interaktion zwischen den Nachbarn ausgehen. Um dies zu bestimmen, wird der Begriff der Nachbarschaft abgegrenzt und erläutert. Es folgt eine Aussage zur Entstehung von Nachbarschaft, die einen Vergleich unter den spezifischen Rahmenbedingungen der hochhäuslichen Umwelt ermöglichen. Damit eine Basis für die Untersuchung der für einen Hochhaus charakteristischen kommunikativen Aktivitäten von Nachbarn gebildet wird, soll die Typisierung der nachbarschaftlichen Verhaltensformen nach H. Klages dargestellt werden. Weiterhin ist die Auseinandersetzung mit der sozialen Wirklichkeit eines Hochhauses notwendig. Was macht das Hochhaus spezifisch im Vergleich zu anderen Wohnformen? Lässt sich eine Typologie der Hochhauseinwohner erstellen? Wie lassen sich die sozialen Netzwerke eines Hochhauses bestimmen? Zwar ist das Wort Nachbarschaft der Herkunft nach von dem Nachbar in älterer Form „Nachbur“, dem nahen Bauer, denjenigen der nahe baut abzuleiten, doch es findet sich schon in der definitorischen Bestimmung der Nachbarschaft von Zedler die Handlungskomponente der nachbarlichen Interaktion und Aktivität , indem es heißt: „Nachbarschaft, heißt in diesen rechten überhaupt entweder den Stand (...) oder auch mehrere zu nächst aneinander stoßenden Häuser, Gebäude, oder Güter oder auch bisweilen die daher entstehenden Gerechtsame und Dienstleistungen derer so genannten Nachbarn, des einen gegen den anderen...“ (http://mdz.bibbvb.de/digbib/lexika/zedler/) Später finden wir auch im Grimmschen Wörterbuch die Nachbarschaft unter anderem als „Verhältnis der Nachbarn zueinander und die damit verbundene Pflichten“.
