Every person in my business has used it since, especially as a source of additional references. It is quite valuable as a reference book; less so as a text. I recommend purchase of the book.

About the Author
Lee Goldberg is a two-time Edgar and Shamus Award finalist who has written and produced scores of highly successful network television series, including Diagnosis Murder, SeaQuest, Hunter, Martial Law, Monk, and The Glades. He's also the author of over thirty novels and non-fiction books, including The Walk, Successful Television Writing, Watch Me Die, King City and fifteen Monk mystery novels. He's currently writing four books with bestselling author Janet Evanovich. As an international television consultant, he has advised networks and studios in Canada, France, Germany, Spain, China, Sweden, and the Netherlands on the creation, writing, and production of episodic television series.

William Rabkin is a two-time Edgar Award nominee who writes the Psych series of novels and is the author of Writing the Pilot. He has consulted for studios in Canada, Germany, and Spain on television series production and teaches screenwriting at UCLA Extension and as an adjunct professor in UC Riverside’s low-residency masters program.

Christa Faust is the author of several novels, including Choke Hold, Money Shot and Hoodtown. David Tully used to teach at New York University, where he got his PhD in Literature (so that’s “Doctor Tully,” if you please), then lived in Los Angeles for several years, where he worked as Head of Development for Oscar-winner Volker Engel at Unchartered Territory, before he moved to Munich, where he worked as a scriptwriter for TV and features, and headwriter for series. He then moved to the United Arab Emirates, where the script for his supernatural thriller DJINN attracted horror legend Tobe Hooper to come to Dubai and direct this first international Arab horror movie. David's critical biography TERRY SOUTHERN AND THE AMERICAN GROTESQUE was published in 2010, and aside from being a script writer (whose projects include the upcoming CASTING THE RUNES, starring Simon Pegg and directed by Joe Dante) and the creative mastermind at Shivertown Road Films, he also now works as a novelist.

MMA, DRUGS, ZOMBIES, AND CROATOAN

VOL.5

Much like the last book I read this was possibly not the best place to start as it is a part of a series. This book is actually volume five in a series that collects three stories at a time for these collections. Naturally you can get the separate or wait and get these sets, I have picked up the sets after reading this. This was my first time reading anything in this series and maybe that is a good thing. I say that because from what I can tell from other reviews are that while good over all this may be the weakest in the series. If this is the weakest then I am in for some good reading because I loved these stories.

The first story is called “The Death Match” and even if I had read the other stories there is a good chance I would have liked this story any way. It is here that our “Dead Man” Matt Cahill who is looking for Mr. Dark finds himself involved in the world of underground cage fighting, involving women and zombies. I am a huge MMA fan and as such actually enjoyed this story.

The second story is “The Black Death” and continues the fun as Matt now enters the world of drugs. In a small town where Matt breaks down a deadly new drug is on the streets and it is a nasty one. I loved this story as well and liked how it played out, kinda cinematic. Others have said this is their favorite of the stories and I can see why. This one deals with a kind of crystal meth that makes you go all “28 Days Later”.

The final story is “The Killing Floor” and has one of the most interesting stories of the bunch as it involves a certain Lost Colony. This one is just as great as the first two but its involvement of the past there on the east coast makes it a must read for me. I say that because I lived many a year in Maryland and love all that colonial history.

This was a great read for me and a quick one at that. The stories are not that long so the pace is excellent and very entertaining. While I do recommend this book to any reader out there I think it would be best to start with the first one and work your way from there. Now I am on to the others.

The Dead Man Vol. 5

I have thoroughly been enjoying The Dead Man series of books from the very start. Volume 5 carries on the story as well as the previous entries, and as always, does so without any disappointment. The book consists of 3 shorter stories, each one an adventure unto itself. I like the approach that is used in creating this book, the authors really have their act together when it comes to delivering an exciting story filled with twists, turns, and unexpected surprises. There really are quite a few aha moments that catch the reader by surprise. I highly recommend reading the first 4 volumes in this series before starting on volume 5 though, or you'll be missing out on a lot of the backstory that shapes the main character.

Great read if you want to follow the series.

The Dead Man series is a great concept: various authors writing stories for the same basic protagonist. His name is Matt Cahill. He was brought back from the dead and travels through different lands fighting the evil deeds of Mr. Dark. Most of the authors who have writing for the series are excellent. And they are very different.

In this volume, there are three of those: The Death Match, The Black Death and The Killing Floor. The second is my favorite: Matt Cahill discovers a new drug (similar to Meth) that is doing horrible things to people.

The pacing of these stories is very fast... and at a certain point, I can easily feel I'm reading a film.

In einem ersten Hauptteil geht es um das Verhältnis der Kirchen zur Europäischen Union. Der zweite Hauptteil beschäftigt sich mit den Kirchen und den Vereinten Nationen. Der Schwerpunkt wird dabei jeweils auf der römisch-katholischen Kirche, meistens repräsentiert im Hl. Stuhl, und ihrer Stellung zu bzw. bei den jeweiligen Institutionen liegen. Dies hängt vor allem damit zusammen, daß dem Autor für eine Untersuchung anderer, etwa reformatorischer oder orthodoxer, Kirchen oder des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen in ihren Beziehungen zur Europäischen Union und zu den Vereinten Nationen nicht ausreichend Material vorgelegen hat, und daß diese Arbeit von ihrem Umfang her die Thematik natürlich nur begrenzt entfalten kann. Deswegen wird auch auf das seit 1995 in Brüssel bestehende Büro des orthodoxen Ökumenischen Patriarchats von Konstantinopel nicht näher eingegangen. Ein Aspekt, der diese Gewichtung sicher auch beeinflusst hat, besteht in der unterschiedlichen Stellung der genannten Kirchen im internationalen Recht und den daraus resultierenden Differenzen in der völkerrechtlichen Präsenz und den Beziehungen zu den internationalen Organisationen. Schwierigkeiten bereitet dabei vor allem die kaum überschaubare Anzahl der über Nichtregierungsorganisationen laufenden Kontakte, die durchaus auch für die römischkatholische Kirche eine Rolle spielen, doch überwiegt dort die Konzentration der Zuständigkeiten und Kompetenzen beim Hl. Stuhl, begünstigt durch seinen Charakter als Völkerrechtssubjekt.
Im Hintergrund der ganzen Darstellung steht die, in vielerlei Hinsicht positiv zu beantwortende, Frage, ob eine Europäisierung bzw. eine Globalisierung der Kirchen und des kirchlichen Rechts wahrzunehmen ist, wobei besonders überprüft werden muß, wie weit diese jeweils im Einzelnen reichen.

Äußerst prominente Fälle stellen die des Bankhauses Barings, der Landkreis Orange County, Procter & Gamble sowie der Metallgesellschaft AG (MG) dar. Hierbei stand grundlegend die Qualität der internen Kontrollmechanismen zur Überwachung der Derivate-Transaktionen in der Kritik.1 Im speziellen Fall der MG rückte zudem die angewandte Absicherungsstrategie und die daraus resultierende Cashflowproblematik in den Mittelpunkt wissenschaftlicher Diskussionen.2 Diese Absicherungsstrategie war Teil der Geschäftsstrategie eines Tochterunternehmens der MG, nämlich der us-amerikanischen3 Tochtergesellschaft namens Refining and Marketing Inc. (MGRM). Die MGRM war ein auf den amerikanischen Energiemarkt spezialisiertes Unternehmen, dass schon seit einigen Jahren versuchte Marktanteile auf dem amerikanischen Energiemarkt4 zu gewinnen. Um sich besser auf diesem Markt zu etablieren, wurden spezielle Lieferverträge für Öl offeriert. Durch diese Verträge entstanden für die MGRM Risiken, welche durch eine spezielle Absicherungsstrategie verhindert werden sollten. Durch die in dieser Strategie genutzten Termingeschäfte entstanden am Ende des Jahres 1993 und zu Beginn des Jahres 1994 allerdings Verluste. Diese waren so erheblich, dass die Muttergesellschaft MG in existenzbedrohende Zahlungsschwierigkeiten versetzt wurde. Dementsprechend musste die MG durch eine beachtliche (wie auch gleichzeitig umstrittene Rettungsaktion) eines Bankenkonsortiums vor dem drohenden Konkurs bewahrt werden. Der Fall MG wirft folglich eine zentrale Frage auf: Weshalb entstanden solche immensen Verluste, wenn doch strategisch abgesichert wurde - hatte die MGRM spekuliert? Die hier vorliegende Arbeit greift diese Frage auf und versucht, in Grundzügen einen Ansatz zur Beantwortung dieser Frage zu entwickeln, zumindest aber eine grobe und verständliche Skizze des „Falls MG“ zu bieten. Denn der Fall MG erweist sich als sehr geeignet, Risiken, welchen sich ein Unternehmen durch den Einsatz von derivativen Instrumenten im Risikomanagement aussetzt, darzustellen. Geisteskranke, geistige Behinderte und Missgestaltete galten als „natürliche Narren“. Als „künstliche Narren“ bezeichnete man im Mittelalter die Menschen, die absichtlich Scherze trieben und sich dumm oder tölpelhaft verhielten. Die Hofnarren als „Offizianten“ in einem festen höfischen Amt sollten ihren Herrn allerdings nicht belustigen, sondern ihn als ernste Figur ständig daran erinnern, dass auch er in Sünde fallen könne und darin sterben werde. Sie waren also eine soziale Institution zulässiger Kritik. In der Bibel ist der Narr ebenfalls keine Figur, die nur Späße machte, sondern eine negative Gestalt. Er ist ein Gottesleugner: „Die Toren sprechen in ihrem Herzen: Es gibt keinen Gott.“

Hieronymus Bosch beschäftigte sich gleichfalls mit dem Narrenthema. Ein Zeugnis davon tragen die Tafeln das Narrenschiff (Musée du Louvre, Paris), Gula-Fragment (New Haven), Tod des Geizigen (National Gallery of Art, Washington) und der Hausierer (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam). Alle vier Arbeiten wurden mit Öl auf Eichenholz gemalt. Die technische Untersuchung der Werke mittels Infrarotfotografie und Dendrochronolgie hat ergeben, dass sie „alle aus demselben Baumstamm [stammen]. Aber sie bilden nicht nur materiell, sondern auch inhaltlich eine Einheit“3, was es noch zu untersuchen gilt. Setzt man das Gula-Fragment als unteres Teilstück mit dem Narrenschiff zusammen, ergibt sich ein Format von 92,1x30,9cm. Der Tod des Geizigen weist eine Größe von 92,6x30,8cm auf. Der Durchmesser der Kreisform des Hausierers beträgt 64,6cm. Das Format, die Malweise und die Holzanalyse bringen deutliche Argumente für die Zusammengehörigkeit der vier Tafeln.

Besonders in den Bereichen Leseintensität, Lesestoff, Leseweisen und Lesefreude sind die Geschlechterunterschiede beträchtlich. Wenn wir vor diesem Hinter-grund vergegenwärtigen, dass Lesekompetenz der Schlüssel zur fachkundigen Nutzung aller Medien und - viel wichtiger - die entscheidende Basiskompetenz der Wissens- und Informationsgesellschaft ist, wird die Tragweite der Problematik deutlich. Die OECD erklärte daher im Sommer 2003 die Leseförderung der Jungen weltweit zu einem vorrangigen Ziel von Bildung. In dieser Arbeit soll den geschlechtsspezifischen Leseunterschieden auf den Grund gegangen werden. Neben der Darstellung der aktuellen Situation liegt dabei der Fokus auf der Ergründung der Ursachen sowie Beispiele für mögliche Präventionsmaßnahmen.

Bedeutet dies, dass die Europäischen Gemeinschaften nun Halt machen mit ihren Anstrengungen im Umwelt- und Verbraucherschutz? Können sie womöglich die Uhr zurückdrehen und die gemeinschaftlichen Regelungen ad acta legen? Wie weit ist die Vergemeinschaftung in diesen Bereichen gekommen und welche Bedeutung haben die Aspekte Umwelt- und Verbraucherschutz zur Zeit im allgemeinen Europarecht? Diese Fragen sollen im folgenden Essay geklärt werden. Nach einem kurzen historischen Abriss werden die aktuellen Rechtsgrundlagen und die wichtigsten Akteure in diesen Politikfeldern vorgestellt. Anhand von drei erheblich differierenden Beispielen wird die Bedeutung dieser Politikbereiche für die EG aufgezeigt. Der Fall aus der Energiepolitik wurde im Kontext der „Berücksichtigung von Sicherheit und Umweltschutz“ betrachtet, da diese in allen drei Gemeinschaftsverträgen oft als Querschnittsmaterie bezeichnet wird. Ferner werden mit der FFH-Richtlinie ein typisches Beispiel aus der Umwelt- und Naturschutzpolitik herangezogen sowie mit der Tabakrichtlinie ein klassisches aus der Gesundheits- und Verbraucherschutzpolitik.
